AQUAPONIC FARM INTERN

Description: The aquaponic farm is a 3,000 square foot commercial and educational farm in The GrowHaus that sells leafy greens to local residents, grocery stores, and restaurants throughout town.  The Aquaponic Farm Intern will work alongside the farm manager to oversee the successful operation of the system. The ideal candidate will be an inspired grower possessing creative problem-solving and critical thinking skills, as well as an interest in social justice and working with disenfranchised populations. The Aquaponic Farm Intern will be working side-by-side with volunteers, community residents, and youth.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with regular crop maintenance including: seeding, transplanting, harvest and system monitoring

  • Help maintain Integrated Pest Management program

  • Fish feeding, monitoring, and logging daily

  • Completing routine nutrient additions as well as monitoring plants for any nutrient deficiencies

  • Maintain cleanliness of farm including growing systems, greenhouse storage, and coolers

  • Troubleshoot equipment malfunctions and correct as necessary

  • Assist in keeping farm operations manual up-to-date with best practices, maintenance procedures, and contingency plans

  • Attend special events at The GrowHaus or on behalf of Colorado Aquaponics

  • Assist other GrowHaus departments as needed

Schedule

  • Six month internships run June-November, September-February, December-May, March-August. 
  • Shifts are Monday-Wednesday 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 or 2:00 p.m. depending on farm needs. Regular 2-hour weekend farm check shifts will be split among interns
  • 15 hours/week
  • Volunteer at one GrowHaus wide event

Skills and Requirements:

  • Passionate about food production

  • Strong work ethic - willingness to do "whatever it takes"

  • Ability to perform repetitive, physical tasks such as seeding and cleaning with a positive attitude and high accuracy

  • Ability to perform well under pressure

  • Ability to work unsupervised and troubleshoot basic repairs and when working alone

  • Capable interpersonal skills, including working with individuals from a wide variety of backgrounds

  • Conversational Spanish skills highly preferred
