Backyard Beekeeping Basics

We are excited to offer a class on natural beekeeping for our June 9th Second Saturday workshop from 11am to 1pm.  There has been much interest in honeybees and beekeeping in recent years due to a rapid decline in honeybee populations. Backyard beekeeping is just one of many ways to support and get to know honeybees. This workshop will be a primer into the world of bees and will cover the history of beekeeping, colony collapse and disorder, ways we can help honeybees, the basics of starting a hive and how to seasonally manage a hive. Courtney Cosgriff a local beekeeper, clinical herbalist, and certified nutritionist from Morrison, CO will be leading the workshop.

Courtney is the owner of Honeybee Herbals a small business dedicated to provide Earth-centered healing and education in the hopes of restoring our connection to the natural world. Courtney has been keeping bees for over 5 years along the front range and has been actively teaching communities about them since than, she feels very called to be a strong voice for the honeybees in trying times.

Tickets are $20 and all proceeds support The GrowHaus' mission of ensuring lasting access to healthy food. Please feel free to come early and join us for a free public tour at 10:00 am to learn more about The GrowHaus. You can buy tickets on our event webpage, here

Second Saturday Workshop Series: Intro to Fermentation

We have partnered with Carolyn from These Things Take Time for our Second Saturday Workshop at The GrowHaus on February 11 from 11 am to 1 pm. The workshop will be on fermentation. Learn what fermentation is, why people do it, and the basic principles of how to do it yourself. If you aren't familiar with These Things Take Time, they are fabulous probiotic cultured food products made right here in Denver.

Tickets are $20 for general public. Members of Tambien, our monthly-giving membership program, always receive a special discount. You can purchase tickets here.

Our top 5 reasons you should be fermenting:

  1. Probiotics– Eating fermented foods and drinking fermented drinks will introduce beneficial bacteria into your digestive system and help the balance of bacteria in your digestive system.
  2. Absorb Food Better– Having the proper balance of gut bacteria and enough digestive enzymes helps you absorb more of the nutrients in the foods you eat.
  3. Preserves Food Easily– Homemade salsa only lasts a few days in the fridge- Fermented homemade salsa lasts months! The same goes for sauerkraut, pickles, beets and other garden foods. Lacto-fermentation allows you to store these foods for longer periods of time without losing the nutrients like you would with traditional canning.

100% of the proceeds will support The GrowHaus and help us continue serving the Elyria-Swansea neighborhood. Please feel free to come early and join us for a free public tour at 10:00 am to learn more about The GrowHaus.
