Meet Tania, Promotora and SNAP Specialist
My name is Tania, and I am a Promotora and SNAP Outreach Specialist, working to support food access.
My journey as a resource to my community of Globeville, Elyria, and Swansea continues to change. However, my passion to remain active in and provide resources to my community has never been more solidified. I was recently given the opportunity to let my inner educator shine. Stepping out of my comfort zone and evolving as a person my community can learn from has been a learning experience. The community allows me to teach them in a way that they understand.
As a Promotora, I work with our elder community through multigenerational classes in the comfort of their home. I recently developed a class to support people living with diabetes and chronic illness, which are unfortunately very prevalent in our community. The curriculum is based on resources from the American Heart Association, and I am able to share this information in a safe environment where community members can learn without judgment and ask questions. In these classes, we discuss and practice healthy meals to help with chronic diseases. I take immense pride in the work that I do, teaching our communities about nutrition and foods that serve as natural remedies. This work continues to have a real impact on the lives of the elderly community.
I am filled with gratitude for the opportunities that I've been given, that is, to teach and be taught. With the continued support of The GrowHaus and supporters like each and every one of you, I continue my education at Metropolitan State University of Denver as a Public Health student, a field of study that I chose because of my work at The GrowHaus. Working as a Promotora in my community has inspired me to continue with the work ahead. Nutrition is a public health concern that is often neglected. It is challenging to see food insecurity and the deep need for resources in my community, but with people like you who support The GrowHaus, we can make health and nutrition possible.
Continuing on my journey, I strive to excel as a young leader providing food resources. This year, my teammate Angelo and I have been providing another essential food access resource: support with SNAP benefits enrollment. This resource accompanies the security of nutrition that our food access program offers. As part of our GrowHaus community, you support my transformative journey from student to professional and help my community access fresh food and nutrition education. It’s a privilege to be a part of something so powerful, and I’m dedicated to continuing this journey with all of you. We continue listening to each other, trusting ourselves to create a lasting change, and committing to the betterment of our community.
